ASSESSMENT
As a parent, if you suspect that your child is struggling in school, he/she should have an educational evaluation as soon as possible. The earlier the intervention, the more likely the child will experience educational success.
The Huntsville Educational Service uses a variety of assessment tools:
The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children
Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery (Cognitive and achievement)
Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children
The Durrell Analysis of reading Difficulty
The Detroit Tests of Learning Aptitude
The Purdue Perceptual-Motor Survey
Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test
Developmental test of Visual-Motor Integration
An assessment is only the beginning of the educational journey. The assessment merely tells the parent the educational strengths and weaknesses of the child. Along with each assessment, an educational program is tailored to the strengths and weaknesses of the child. Remedial recommendations addressing each area of weakness and appropriate educational materials are included in each test report. Close contact is maintained with parents as work with their progresses.

PROGRAMS
Tutoring is available on an individual and small group basis for pre-school through grade twelve. Educational programs incorporate several categories.
Perceptual Skills
Work in the areas of visual and auditory perception is stressed for all ages due to these skills being necessary for higher level academics to develop in a generalized manner.
Reading/Phonics
Several Corrective reading and phonics programs are utilized incorporating the Orton-Gillingham approach which is a multi-sensory approach to teaching. It is believed that generalized learning takes place when all of the senses are involved. Spelling and language programs closely follow reading so that as each child acquires reading skills, written language/spelling skills will be remediated simultaneously. Once students have reached grade level skills, speed reading techniques are available for older students.
Math
Math programs are also taught on a multisensory basis. For younger students, math is introduced on a concrete basis utilizing manipulatives and combining math with real world situations so that the student can not only calculate but apply this calculation knowledge when faced with real world situations.
Remedial algebra and geometry programs are available for high school students who are struggling with these concepts.
Cursive Handwriting
Cursive handwriting is strongly stresses through the use of a Developmental Handwriting program with an emphasis on using all of the sensory modalities. Often, by teaching the child cursive handwriting at a young age, many of the issues such as reversals and spacing can be remediated.
Additional Services
Setting up educational programs for children who are home-schooled.
Setting up programs to address special needs for students in private schools.
